An evening at Shoan in Katagihara, Kyoto's Nishikyo Ward, begins with a look at the daily specials listed on the whiteboard and menu inserts. Fresh fish is prepared with thoughtful care, yielding dishes such as fragrant seared shime saba (cured mackerel), bigfin reef squid sashimi, and delicate tachiuo (cutlassfish) nigiri sushi ordered by the piece. The kitchen also turns out classic drinking snacks, from crisp fish bone crackers and butter-sautéed squid to dried squid tempura, pairing easily with a cold beer or a simple chuhai.

The dining room is clean and bright, fitted with counter seats and raised tatami floor seating to accommodate both a casual drink after work and a sit-down family meal. With its warm, unpretentious atmosphere, the restaurant warmly welcomes diners with children.

Beyond its evening izakaya hours, Shoan prepares bento for lunchtime takeout and local delivery. Convenient everyday choices include popular karaage fried chicken, mackerel simmered in miso, and the hearty Shoan Bento packed with fried prawns, half a pork cutlet, and karaage. Payments are cash only, and seat reservations can be arranged in advance.
